One Room at a Time by Hannah Alexander

Have you ever been so overwhelmed by the clutter in your life that you cant face the thought of attacking it and whittling it down? It could be clutter in your home, clutter in your social life, or clutter in Continue reading read more »

Peace Begins With Letting Go

Have you ever wondered why on certain days the sky shines so brightly and so warm and wonderful right where you are? Have you ever noticed the shimmering rays of the sun peeking through the clouds as if God is saying directly to you, Im here. ? Its because HE is there! He is smiling [] read more »

Bloom where you are planted

Greetings my sweet readers! Im delighted to share that we are finally settling into our new  home and new city here in Florida. Its hard to believe how fast this summer and fall have flown by with all the hard work and preparation that goes into showing, selling and closing on a home. We are [] read more »

Moving, Thou Art A Heartless...

Ah moving, the wonderful dream-filled thoughts of packing up your belongings and setting out leisurely to your new home. Where you think that you can pair down your belongings into a few manageable boxes. Where the recommended moving truck will be more than enough. Where you can pack up and be done at your old place in just a few hours. When you think all of your friends who said they would help would show up at the same time to help, the promise of beer and pizza a given.Wrong....So...very....wrong....T... read more »

Hard To Believe

So I am getting ready to go out to Chicago for a visit with my family. And it is the weirdest thing... I am actually a little sad to leave here! Just the way I would be, back in Chicago, when I was getting ready to come visit (and eventually move) out here. Its weird because I really, really, really do want to go see my parents and grandparents and everyone, and I've been looking forward to it since the last time I saw my parents at the beginning of June. I've even been counting down with a paper chain in... read more »

Things Are Going Well

I guess it has been a while since I posted! This hasn't been because I haven't been wanting to blog, but more because my computer has been slow as molasses, to the point where writing a blog entry would take me three hours and give me a huge headache. I've cleaned it out a little so it is somewhat faster now!So! I have been here for a whole month now! It is going well. Lily has adapted wonderfully to her new life here. I was so worried that she would be unhappy and homesick... but she loves Auntie Em and... read more »

The Closening Of Angels

This week I have sensed a spiritual shift or a “closening” of the realm of angels and God. It had been a period of weeks or maybe even months since I felt this happening. This time seems different than previous times. Why? I am not totally sure, but I am sure it is happening. The Continue reading The Closening Of Angels read more »

Apartment Hunting in vancouver from abroad

I wanted to share a little bit about our experience apartment hunting from abroad for people who are looking to move from the US to Vancouver. First off I had a lot of help from friends that had already moved here years prior, they told us websites they used to find rentals, good and bad neighborhoods, expensive and inexpensive spots etc. In our case we knew from very early on we didn't want to commute, so North Van and West Side were immediately scratched off the list. Public Library Living i... read more »

How Writing is Like Moving by Julie Arduini

This past year has been full of adventures both in and outside my writing life. I had the opportunity to sign contracts and move forward in the publication process. Most of my time has been spent with our journey to move to what we call our forever home. Were now in our new place and [] read more »

Moving In

Yesterday we drove down to Auburn to get Safa situated in her apartment. We loaded up the car after breakfast, and headed out. She made sure to bring most essentials, plus items that I'm not sure if she'll ever use, but hope she does, such as a mop, and a crock pot. I have been working on a cookbook/ binder for her all summer, so I do hope that she decides to do some cooking. The compilation of recipes is a graduation gift she had specifically asked for. Even though it took me years after her original r... read more »

This Old House

If these walls could talk. Man, the stories they would tell. It's hard to say goodbye to a place that has seen so many wonderful memories, and had deep enough ground for roots to be sufficiently planted. If you have read this blog in the past you may have noticed that I have, from time to time, mentioned that the home office of the Uber Dad Chronicles is in lovely Mt. Olive, Alabama. Well, that is about to change. After 15 years at the same location we will be closing our doors for the last time, and mov... read more »

Figuring Out Your Finances: Resources for Smart...

Being intelligent about your personal finances is always important, but especially when you're just starting out with your first job, first place, and first bills after college.Costs starting out can be really high, especially if you're living in a major metropolis where a lot of entry level jobs are (like me, in NYC) and you also don't have as much experience managing your money responsibly as you will later. On top of that, your paychecks are unlikely to be as high as they will (hopefully) someday be.D... read more »

Top Ten Tips for a Successful Move

Since I'm graduating (can I say that enough times? I'mgraduatingI'mgraduatingI'mgraduating) I'm moving cities - to NEW YORK CITY! Still, a move is a move. Here are my tips, hopefully I can take some of my own advice next week.Don't count on it.1) Give yourself enough time.I'm guilty of breaking this cardinal rule, but I blame it on Manhattan rent - I'm moving into my new apartment on Sunday, June 1 in the evening and beginning work on Monday, June 2 in the morning.Nobody talk to me. I'm going to be grouc... read more »

10 Tips For Ditching That Winter Weight

Substitute your favorite junk food with a healthy snack. Nothing will derail your weight loss plans quicker than a craving for a bag of Doritos JACKED Ranch Dipped Hot Wings flavored chips. Honors Day

I took the day off work today to go to Safa's school, for her senior year Honors Day. Admittedly, it doesn't take a lot for me to take off work, but man, I had a heck of a busy day today! The event at her school was from 8:30 until about 10am. Safa is already member of a couple of honor societies; Beta Club, National Honor Society, National Forensics League (debate), but the school also joined another group for the first time this year: the National Science Honor Society. This tapping was a complete surp... read more »

Moving in Winter

Snow sliding off the storage shed roof. We thought it was going to fall on us! Our house is officially ours now! Hurray! I'm so happy I could run a marathon. We've been slowly moving in; one day at a time. Trying to move in the middle of a Michigan winter is like trying to fly a kite with no wind. It's possible but not easy. We moved most of our things in the evening when hubby gets off work. A little at a time! He couldn't get a whole day off from work because they've been really busy, and the Saturday... read more »

3 Words For Today You May Want To Consider

No sooner had I completed my blog entry for today than I found myself hearing and seeing words. I feel like we are in a season of revival, of awakening and words that encourage and change us are important. I see, as do others, far reaching change of our nation. With that in mind I [] read more »

And, I'm back!

This time it's not that there hasn't been much going on; there's been too much going on! Moving house is not a walk in the park. We are still shifting boxes from house to house, sorting through usable discards to donate, and trying to find homes for every item that we actually want to keep. With the hope that when I put an essential item in a drawer or cabinet, I'll actually remember where it is when I need it! We moved just over two weeks ago, but it's going to take at least that much (if not twice as m... read more »

Feeling so blessed!

After five months of eager anticipation, we have come from this: to this: Today we closed on our new home. The process went very smoothly, and it's such a blessing to have a new place that we have put so much thought and love into. We plan to do some gradual transitioning over this weekend and the following week, and November 8 is scheduled as the Big Move. As long as it goes as planned, that should be our first night in our new home.I haven't shared much of the progress over the past five months, but ... read more »

Semangat [ 13 Februari 2013 ]

Home Sweet Home

It took three straight days of unpacking over 50 boxes but somehow, it already feels like home. I have to admit, I dont handle these situations well. All of our stuff rumbling around in boxes and bags in the back of trucks and trunks and splattered throughout multiple rooms and floors. Holy anxiety Batman! I [] read more »

Moving On

Change is something that we all experience no matter the stage of life that we are in. I am really at the point in my life when I should be looking toward retirement but instead have found myself making changes that take me in quite a different direction. After almost fifteen years with the same [...] read more »

We Morphed Into Mole People

The neighbors were all looking me like I was nutso as I took pictures of the sky from my porch. Today is yet another gloomy, cloud covered day here in Washington. What else is new though? My daughter and I are used to this gloom, this constant cloud cover that brings with it oceans of rain. And my daughter and I are southern people, so once upon a time, this gloom was a real hardship for us. We had quite an adjustment to make. I had been living in Mississippi since I was 9, and when I was 19 (and pregnan... read more »

Update: Moving Stinks and My Computer's Down

So a rather short post today as I'm typing this on my cellphone because the power cord on my laptop is toast. Bah humbug. Which also means my writing has come to a standstill. And in case any of you lovely readers haven't noticed I didn't make my April deadline for my book which is why the blog's been dead for a couple months. I have been able to get a lot of work done on my novel and submissions just not enough. The fact that I just moved from Langley to Kamloops though might have something to do with th... read more »

These little guys... ...are best friends in Sunday School. So when Bilal got invited to Adib's birthday party, how could we say no? They had a great time together!I'm sure he'll be on Bilal's birthday guest list too!Tomorrow the boys go for dental check ups. Between the three kids there hasn't been a single cavity yet, thank goodness! I'm hoping that this time won't be any different. And after their appointment, I'll drop them home and take Safa for her maxillofacial appointment. Time to get those third... read more »

Move Update

With thanks toalalara.deviantart.comfor the "free to use or share" artworkI was all about congratulating myself on the great job I'd done purging. We came in almost 5,000 pounds below the moving estimation of 20,000 pounds. The estimate was almost 3,000 pounds below our shipping weight when we moved from Georgia to Virginia -- twelve years ago. Pre-kids, too.I practically dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back when our packers announced we had only 120 boxes. We moved to California with over 4... read more »

After going back and forth, back and forth, for quite a while, we have decided to take the plunge. As of yesterday afternoon it's official, our house has been posted up for sale. As of this morning there is a 'for sale' sign in our front yard. The agent will come to collect a spare key for the lock box. Then the showings will begin, I hope. Still having mixed feelings about it all. The thought of moving on to a new place is exciting; this is the longest I have lived at any address my entire life. We are ... read more »

A bit unplanned

Today didn't quite go as planned. I had only a few patients on my schedule today so at the last minute I decided to block my schedule and transferred those patients on to Zakir's schedule. So it freed up my day, since I had a meeting planned at 12:30. Zakir and I just happened to drive into a lovely neighborhood recently, previously unknown to us. A small subdivision, with sidewalks, which are quite a luxury in our little city. And since we have been vacillating about possibly moving, we decided to conta... read more »

Moving, Supergrass, 1999

¡A moverse! Letra de la Píldora. Hasta la próxima. read more »

Paper Clutter

Today is Saturday. I'm sitting in the living room, cleaning out some paper clutter that has been weighing on me since... Oh, I don't know, I've had paper clutter weighing on me since I encountered adulthood. This seems like a good moment to give a shout out to my friends from college. In the early 1990's, not everyone had a computer to themselves, and I was one of the fortunate few who did. It was an enormous "portable" computer with a six-inch green-and-black screen and two floppy disk drives (the luxur... read more »

Oh Canada

As you may know, I am moving to Michigan very very soon. As in I leave for Michigan in 27 days and get there in 29 days.Needless to say the only thing I have packed is my shot glass collection... which is obviously the most important part. So important in fact that it took me hoursto individually wrap each and every one and pack them nice and neatly into boxes before I left for the summer in Boston. Because really, the only thing I will need in graduate school are shot glasses right?Who needs clothes, sh... read more »

On The Move Again.

I moved for the third time in a month last weekend. Not that I wanted to, but it was best for all concerned. The well-being of my family is utmost in my mind and nothing comes before that ever. Lucie my big, red dog has suffered stress along with me during this time. I know she [...] read more »

I Made It.

My New Internet Service

Bell was supposed to be here between 8 am and 5 pm for our sat tv service and 12 pm and 5 pm for our internet service. Talk about annoying! Here was a whole day one of us had to be here waiting for them to show up. Well the internet, the most important service was apparently delayed as the serviceman didn't show up until 4:45 pm then proceeded to be slower than molasses in January and from the looks of it had never seen a Mac in his life. He told me to get the wireless router working I had to delete Airp... read more »

The Pluggability of Mac

A few years ago I switched from Windows XP to Mac and haven't looked back. The nice thing is even the Mac desktop just plugs in and is ready to go. I have taken it down to our vacation home and even with this move there is nothing special to have to do. There's no towers or extras to have to deal with. It's what you see is what you get. I move the computer over to the new house tonight but won't have internet service until sometime tomorrow. I can't wait to blog from real high speed internet! Garden Gnom... read more »
