Experimental Kitchen : Apple and Cinnamon Golde...

It has been a busy month and I am trying to make time for blogging. Coming up with 1 blog post per week as what I've planned for when I started this blog has been a challenge. Maintaining a blog around my family commitments, personal pursuit and aspirations isn't easy as I have so many exciting ideas that I want to make happen in the near future.Despite all that, today I would like to share one of my favourite scroll recipe, Apple and Cinnamon Golden Syrup Scroll. It took me more than 2 hours 30 minute... read more »

Chicken Thighs with Honey

And just when you thought you have done it all when it comes to cooking chicken, along comes another GREAT recipe to try, and this is no exception! This is not your typical sweet and sour recipe that offers death-by-sour and tastes like a sauce out of a bottle from your local supermarket. It is well balanced with low acidity and sweetness, allowing the natural flavours of the chicken to come out, so I don't even call it a sweet and sour chicken, which it is in essence. I love to cook with chicken thigh... read more »

Italian Tangerine Tart

Mandarin, Satsuma, Tangerine or Naartjie, call it what you like, this is a super-easy versatile fruit tart that is gooey and sticky and is just awesome! As a South African I call this fruit I am using anaartjiewhich is a word used in South African English that originated from the Tamil wordnarteimeaning citrus. It is also known as Citrus unshiu (a seedless and easy-peeling citrus) commonly referred to as a hardy mandarin, satsuma mandarin, satsuma orange, Christmas orange or a tangerine. This is a fanta... read more »

Roasted Butternut & Apple Soup

The big surprise with this delicious soup is it is actually a detox soup piled with loads of healthy ingredients and can be enjoyed hot or cold. Who doesn't love a hearty butternut or pumpkin soup when the rain sets it and temps start dropping. The secret in this recipe - besides the apples - is the butternut that is roasted in the oven. This allows for it to caramelise which really brings out that lovely sweet flavour. When choosing your apples, stay away from Grammy Smith as they are really tart and al... read more »

Fikcles @ Taman Tun Dr Ismail

Price: Mid-range Cuisine: Western Catphobia-Friendly?: Yes Halal At a glance, Fikcles fits right in with the current quirky café troupe with its adorably-painted façade and its coffee-scented interior. But scan through the menu and you’ll find this genius creation that sets this cosy café significantly apart: We’re talking about the Salted Egg Squid Wrap (RM15.90). Have you ever heard of anything so delectable stuffed between tortillas? The generous portion comes with awesomely thick fries and ... read more »

How's everyone doing this 3-day weekend? Not only is it Meatless Monday (yayness!), it's also a public holiday (double the yayness!). Ant Free Sand Box-- Find Out How!!

A few weeks ago, I set up our little sand box. In past years, we had a problem with ants hanging out in the sand. Awhile back, I had read that cinnamon is a natural ant deterrent. I decided to try this theory out andadd some cinnamon in with the sand. It worked! We have had an ant free sand box for over a month and the sand smells awesome! It is actually kind of funny, you can actually see the ants climb up the side of the sand box and retreat as soon as they smell the cinnamon! All I did was sprinkle ci... read more »

Tips #1 - Make your home smell delicious!

Now I dont know about you but I always worry about what people smell when they come into our house for the first time - or any time for that matter! Maybe its because we have pets, and non-pet owners often comment on doggy smells in pet-owners homes, or because weve all had the experience of walking into someones house and wrinkling up our noses or trying to subtly mouth breathe! Anyway, I spend a small fortune on plug-ins and sprays, scented candles and all the rest of that commercial junk. I really h... read more »

Skinny Banana Muffins

As my bitty baby girl, mini-muffin#3 turns 6 months old next week, I decided it was time I finally lost the baby weight. Im so glad I have her to blame this on, along with two other mini-muffins. So, in spite of the fact that I probably had baby weight to lose long before these babies were a twinkle in their daddys eye, Im going off the deep end and into the Weight Watchers pool. However, while watching weight (hopefully watching it disappear!), I havent lost sight of my loves: muffins. These babies... read more »

Blueberry Baked French Toast

This is one of those we havent been to the grocery store suppers. Because we havent been to the grocery store. Sometimes the grocery store is worse than the dentist. And, in the interest of saving my sanity, we are avoiding it. You probably already have most of this stuff in your fridge and pantry, even if it appears empty (like mine - call me Old Mother Hubbard). And the beautiful thing is, you can substitute any fruit you want (even canned! just strain it). This is also a really easy dinner to c... read more »

Sour Cream Blueberry Banana Bread

I always try to buy too many bananas. Then, hopefully, at the end of the week, there will be too many left over and Ill be forced to make banana bread - a treat at the top of my treat list. You all have a treat list, too, right? Heres mine: 1. Banana Bread 2. Caprese Salad on French Bread 3. Fresh Strawberries 4. Home-grown home-made Popcorn (dont get me started on the incredible difference between home grown popcorn and store kernels, much less BAGGED popcorn.  Please tell me you dont buy that.) 5. ... read more »

More Homemade Granola Bars

I've modified this recipe slightly, and it's even better!1) I removed the brown sugar. Honestly, it's sweet enough with all the honey. With the brown sugar it was too sweet.2) I've added (drum roll) - cocoa powder!!!! This meant removing other spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, etc.) to avoid flavour clashes.3) I've added sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and chopped walnuts.Next I'm going to try replacing the read more »
