Black Eyed Peas - The Good Luck Charm of the South

If you live in the south, you just may eat black eyed peas on New Year's to bring you good luck in the coming year. But do you know why?The tradition of eating black eyed peas on New Year's began in 1866, just after Sherman's march from Atlanta to Savannah. Turns out the Union soldiers didn't think much of black eyed peas when they pillaged all the towns and plantations in Georgia. The north used black eyed peas for feed stock, so the Union soldiers left all the silos of those little, delicious legumes a... read more »

Busy Memorial Day Weekend

It was one of those weekends where we weren't quite sure what we wanted to do with the kids. We had the dog's space reserved at the kennel, in case we decided to go out of town, but it just wasn't coming together, so we cancelled his reservation, and settled on a couple of day trips instead. On Saturday we took the kids to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. We haven't been in several years; as far as I recall, the last time we went Bilal was still in a stroller. So he obviously didn't remember anythin... read more »

Trip to Atlanta

We headed to Atlanta the last Tuesday of summer vacation, with every intention to make that second promised trip to Six Flags. What we didn't realize was that the park is now closed on weekdays until the end of the season. So, we decided to do number two on the kids' choice of attractions, the World of Coca Cola. We parked a few blocks away and had a leisurely stroll through Centennial Park. Would have been a little nicer if it weren't so hot and humid. But the kids at the splash park behind us didn't s... read more »

Back to the Aquarium

On our second day in Atlanta we were planning to visit the Georgia Aquarium (a place we've visited several times, but enjoy going back to) and the World of Coca Cola. But evidently the rest of the world had the same idea. We had no clue that the crowds would be so huge. It was virtually impossible to walk anywhere without bumping into people, and taking photos was even more difficult. However, thanks to some advance booking we were able to get tickets for the new Dolphin Tales show, which was sold out by... read more »

Legoland Discovery Center

We fought the crowds during our trip to Atlanta. Apparently, since it's Memorial Day weekend, both a long weekend and the first one of the summer holidays, everybody decided that it was a good time to visit Atlanta. The crowds were horrible. But the trip to LLDC was kind of fun.The fabulous Fox Theater: We met Farah and the boys there for a little while. They built cars, and had a chance to race them too! That was on Saturday afternoon. And on Sunday, The Georgia Aquarium. Pics to follow soon. read more »

Fall At The Garden

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year at the Atlanta Botanical Gardenbecause of their annual Scarecrows in the Garden exhibit. This year was no exception and I was happy to be in town a couple of days so I could swing by for a visit. Every year the Atlanta Botanical Garden invites local companies, groups and individuals to bring their creative juices and add crazy and wild characters to lurch in corners and along the walkways throughout the garden. This year was the 11th annual event which attrac... read more »

A bit sad

As I type this my parents are probably getting ready to board their flight back to London Heathrow ariport. Twenty days just flew by while they were here. We had a great time, getting together after almost five years. Hm, I think we shouldn't wait this long between visits.Bilal and I drove to Atlanta this morning to drop them off at the airport. We made a nice trip of it; went to an Indian vegetarian restaurant for lunch and then went to the Georgia Aquarium for a couple of hours, before leaving them at ... read more »

Hamza's turn

Hamza was up bright and early this morning to be dropped off at school by 5:15am. He is headed to Atlanta for a three day band trip. And with all great trips to Atlanta he'll be visiting the Georgia Aquarium, Stone Mountain, Six Flags, and attending an Atlanta Braves game, among other things. Also performing in a music festival, of course, the main purpose of the trip. So we'll be seeing him back in town late Saturday evening if everything goes according to schedule. I'm going to miss him while he's gone... read more »

I can hardly wait!

Tomorrow I drive to Atlanta to pick my Dad from the airport. I haven't seen him in almost five years (he was here when Bilal was born), so it feels like this visit is long overdue. If it weren't for Skype I think we'd feel it even more. It is great to at least video chat with him once a week. It makes me so glad he embraced technology. They live in the UK, so it will be a direct flight from Heathrow into Atlanta for them. Just hoping that the high alert status after the death of Osama Bin Laden doesn't m... read more »

Seventh Grade Field Trip

OK, so I'm blogging waayyyyy in the wrong order, but here are some random photos from the Hamza's field trip in November. I chaperoned five boys on the field trip to Atlanta and it was actually quite a pleasant experience. The boys were well behaved and courteous, and followed my directions to a T. A comedy of errors

Yesterday we were planning a trip to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center to check out the rockets and visit the Star Wars exhibit. But it turns out that the Star Wars exhibit doesn't open until the end of June, so we decided, on the spur of the moment, to go to Atlanta for the day instead.Good intentions, but things didn't start out as smoothly as planned. First of all it took us a lot longer than we wanted just to get everyone mobilized. Then as the kids were sitting in the car I ran upstairs to get ... read more »
